We take a look at Nokia's rumored phablet
News has been steadily leaking about a Nokia
phablet hitting the market in the last quarter of 2013, and just recently @evleaks started tweeting pictures of a device that they’re claiming is that very device, the Nokia Lumia 1520. Now, preliminary specs have leaked for the device and it’s looking promising, so we thought we’d compare it to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, which will probably be its closest competitor, to see which one offers the most for the money.

According to the rumors, Nokia has given the 1520 a Qualcomm Snapdragon an 800 chipset, which means a 2.3GHz Krait 400 processor and an Adreno 330 GPU. It’s likely to have 2GB RAM and will run on the Amber iteration of Windows Phone 8, Microsoft’s mobile operating system. It will also apparently have 32GB storage space but, sadly, no SD slot.
The Galaxy Note 3 has an Exynos 5 Octa 5420 chipset, consisting of two quad-core processors; one a 1.9 GHz Cortex-A15 and the other a 1.3 GHz Cortex-A7. The smaller of the two deals with the processes that don’t require as much power, leaving the larger to handle the power-heavy tasks. It comes with 3GB RAM and runs on Android Jelly Bean, version 4.3. The Note 3 comes with 16, 32 or 64GB storage and has a micro SD slot that accepts up to an extra 64GB space.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has a 5.7-inch, super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, which runs at 1080 x 1920 pixels, pushing out a pixel density of 386PPI. It also comes with an S-Pen, which gives added options for input.
The Nokia Lumia 1520 is slated to run at the same resolution pixels, but across a 6-inch capacitive touchscreen, giving it a slightly lower pixel density of 367PPI.
Form
Both devices are very typical of their ranges, with the Samsung following the same large-screen, round edges format as the other Galaxy handset, offering just one button on the fascia. The device is made of plastic, which has been unpopular in the past, but Samsung has given the device a faux-leather back to try and jazz things up a bit.
The Nokia 1520 has the same straight lines as the rest of the Lumia range and so far, from leaked images, we know it comes in red. It appears to be made in a sturdy polycarbonate material, giving it a tough, hardwearing exterior and, well, it’s a Nokia, so you just know it’ll be well built.
Camera
The Galaxy Note 3 has an impressive 13-megapixel primary camera that captures 4128 x 3096 pixels and offers a huge number of enhancements, such as autofocus, LED flash, Dual Shot, simultaneous HD video and image recording, geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, image stabilization, panorama and HDR. Its video recording capabilities are notable too, capturing 2160P video at 30 frames per second and 180P video at 60 frames per second.
Nokia has reportedly given the Nokia 1520 a whopping 20-megapixel primary camera, which is reported to sport Carl Zeiss optics and benefit from autofocus, LED flash, PureView technology, geo-tagging, face detection and panorama, as well as 1080P video capture at 30 frames per second.
